Motor Trend and CarSim: A Dream Drag Race

Mechanical Simulation once again collaborated with Motor Trend for the November 2006 issue of Motor Trend Magazine. This issue pits the Bugatti Veyron took on McLaren's F1, Ferrari's Enzo, Porsche's Carrera GT, and Ford's GT against each other in a quarter mile run.

This is the third time our engineers at Mechanical Simulation have been tapped by Motor Trend for this continuing series. This comparison is different from the first two races, which included the BMW Z4 M Coupe against the Porsche Cayman S and the Chevrolet Camaro Concept vs. the 2006 Ford Mustang, as Motor Trend asked Mechanical Simulation to help simulate five vehicles simultaneously.

CarSim Wins The Race

Mechanical Simulation’s Technical Support Specialist, Phil Mather, has been putting CarSim to good use during his 2006 SCCA SpecMiata racing season.  In his last four races, Phil has earned three wins and a second place finish in what has become the most competitive road racing class in the country.  While Phil is still gathering data in order to exactly model his Mazda Miata racecar, he has been able to use CarSim to learn about how fundamental changes to the chassis set-up will affect the racecar’s handling and performance.  SpecMiata rules require all of the cars (1990-2005 Mazda Miatas) to be modified equally in order to create a class of racecars with similiar performance.  Any advantages in chassis set-up are key to good success for the drivers.  Mather has used CarSim to simulate changes in ride height, roll stiffness, and track width to see what the general direction of the change will make to the handling of the car.  This enables him to arrive at the track with a much better idea of how the changes he makes will affect the racecar.  To learn more please contact Phil Mather.
